During IVF treatment, retrieval refers to the removal of the oocytes from the ovaries. The woman is put under light sedation, while the oocytes are typically retrieved via a transvaginal ultrasound-guided needle. The needle goes through the back wall of the vagina (up to the ovaries), where the oocytes are gently aspirated or sucked in through the needle.
Rarely, retrieval may take place via laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery involves making a small incision in the abdomen, through which a long, thin camera and instruments are used. Laparoscopic surgery is done under general anesthesia.
After retrieval, the oocytes are taken to a lab where they are placed together with sperm, for fertilization.
